On May 30, the first meeting was held on the topic: “Turning to the East. Problems and prospects. In addition to deputies, Sergey Karaganov, dean of the Faculty of World Economy and World Politics, Honorary Chairman of the Presidium Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, Mikhail Gusman, First Deputy Director General of the FSUE “ITAR-TASS”, and representatives of the Foreign Ministry took part in the discussion.
During the discussion, there were different opinions about the pros and cons of the course on the “Asian” direction. S.Karaganov spoke about the competitive advantages of a reversal to the East, M.Gusman warned about differences in mentality and culture.
Summed up the head of the committee Leonid Slutsky. “The turn to the East is already underway and is of strategic importance for our country. It is important to continue this topic and come to some kind of summary algorithm, if you will, a “road map”. So far we are far from this, ”he said. The Chairman emphasized the “archival importance” of continuing research in this area. “It depends on us whether this course will be planned, advantageous, consistent and scientifically substantiated. I think that this is a task, in the search for solutions to which it is also necessary to take part in the deputy corps. Here we must approach in a balanced and pragmatic way,” he concluded.
