Today we held a meeting of the International Affairs Committee via videoconference from Strasbourg. The issue on the agenda was of paramount importance – the Russian-American agreement to extend the START-3 Treaty for another five years – until February 5, 2026.
We unanimously recommended that the State Duma ratify it and consider it as the first item on the agenda of the plenary session today.
Russia has consistently advocated the extension of the CSV. Today’s decision by the Russian parliament will be a major historic step towards preserving the entire system of strategic stability and nuclear deterrence in the world. In addition – and this is important given the specifics of Russian-American relations – it will make it possible to intensify further negotiations on arms control between the Russian Federation and the United States.
