Members of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, headed by its Chairman Leonid Slutsky, held a meeting with the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Ghana.
Speaking at the meeting, Leonid Slutsky particularly noted the irreversibility of the processes of building a multipolar world order and the need for sovereign development of states in accordance with the UN Charter. “We must be sure that any country on the planet – no matter how small – will not be a territory of external control, as we see, for example, in Ukraine. Each country should have the right to independently choose its own path of development without foreign interference,” said Leonid Slutsky.
The head of the State Duma Committee also spoke in favor of expanding bilateral contacts between Moscow and Accra, including in the area of parliamentary diplomacy. In this context, Leonid Slutsky proposed holding a joint meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the State Duma and the Parliament of Ghana.
“I hope that our meetings will be regular. It is important to me that the people of Ghana today are following the path that they themselves choose, that no one decides the fate of Ghana and its people from the outside,” Leonid Slutsky noted.
Leonid Slutsky also expressed hope that representatives of Ghana will take part in the upcoming major international forums, such as SPIEF and Army-2025, noting Russia’s openness to cooperation in all areas.
First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs Alexey Chepa, who took part in the meeting, for his part pointed out the rich history of Russia’s relations with African countries. “Russia has always, since the period of decolonization of the states of the African continent, contributed to their independence. And we are glad that Ghana today is such – free and independent, following its own path of development. Of course, we have many points of contact for the comprehensive development of cooperation with African countries in many areas: diplomatic, economic, military-technical, cultural, educational, tourist, humanitarian,” said Alexey Chepa.
He recalled that the State Duma is actively working on Friendship groups for relations with the parliaments of African countries. “We hope that in the very near future such a friendship group will also appear in the parliament of the Republic of Ghana, which will give a new impetus to the successful implementation of our common plans and projects. I am confident that our experience and competencies will allow us to achieve the highest results in our cooperation,” concluded the First Deputy Head of the Committee.
