Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, met with a delegation from the Committee for Support of Oversight Bodies of the Libyan Chamber of Deputies. The parties discussed bilateral cooperation and the Libyan situation.
Leonid Slutsky noted that Russia and Libya are closely cooperating, and interparliamentary meetings allow for a more systematic approach to contacts.
“The fate of Libya is of great concern to Russia. Synchronizing our views will allow us to elevate Russian-Libyan interparliamentary cooperation to a higher and more systematic level in the modern coordinate system,” said Leonid Slutsky. He emphasized the importance of intra-Libyan settlement issues for building a balanced security system in the region and strengthening cooperation with Russia, including economic cooperation and significant infrastructure projects.
Zayed Hadiya Atiya, Chairman of the Committee for Supporting Oversight Bodies of the Libyan House of Representatives, noted the importance of mutual contacts in maintaining and strengthening relations between the two countries, inviting Russian parliamentarians to a reciprocal visit.
“Without a doubt, our visit will be considered a message to those countries that interfere in Libya’s affairs and believe that Russia is currently only preoccupied with the Ukrainian issue. However, this is not true. Our visit, and your expected visit, will demonstrate the maintenance of the high level of Russian-Libyan relations,” said Zayed Hadiya Atiya.
Representing the Russian side, Maria Butina, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, also participated in the meeting.
