The Foreign Affairs Committee supported the ratification of the Strategic Partnership Agreement with Iran

The International Affairs Committee unanimously recommended ratifying the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and Iran. The issue is proposed to be submitted to the State Duma for consideration on April 8.

“The treaty lays a solid foundation for expanding the comprehensive Russian-Iranian partnership in all areas, including defense, the fight against terrorism, energy, the financial sector, transport, industry, science and technology. Its ratification will fully reflect the unprecedented dynamics of the development of bilateral relations between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran in recent years,” said Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Committee.

The treaty creates a basis for close coordination between Moscow and Tehran at the regional and global levels, including in matters of forming a multipolar world order. At the same time, the formation of a military alliance is not envisaged, the head of the committee added.

The treaty is concluded for a period of 20 years with the possibility of automatic extension for a subsequent five-year period.
