On June 29, the fourth International Parliamentary Conference “Parliamentarians for Peace” was held via videoconference. This year, over a hundred parliamentarians from Latin American countries participated in the event.
Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, emphasized that one of the conference’s themes is strengthening parliamentary diplomacy in the modern world. “We have a unique opportunity to generate new ideas and approaches to problem solving. These problems are complex and multifaceted, but at their core lies the objective process of building a new world order without the dominance of Western civilization, which has imposed its norms and rules on everyone for five centuries,” said Leonid Slutsky.
Leonid Slutsky added that the hegemony of the collective West is becoming a thing of the past.
“Latin American countries have at various times experienced and continue to experience pressure from their northern neighbor. The same is happening on other continents. As a result of Western intervention under the slogans of democracy and human rights, Iraq, Syria, and Libya have practically lost their statehood. Just recently, the courageous people of Iran managed to stand firm in the face of blatant aggression from the US and Israel. The only way to resist the collective West’s attempts to maintain its dominant position is through the unity of the rest of the world,” he concluded.
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Ivan Melnikov, for his part, emphasized that the creation of a multipolar world is an objective and natural process, not driven by any one country’s desire to establish hegemony and dominance.
“The dominance of one group of countries is precisely coming to an end, and resistance to this trend is growing. This is the source of the global crises provoked by the US and its allies. It is with sincere regret that I must note that the UN and its institutions are not acting in this situation as they should, given their statutory rights and obligations. We hear no condemnation of aggressive and illegal actions from the UN Security Council or its Secretary-General. In this regard, we must acknowledge that the UN is in a deep crisis,” he noted.
This year, more than a hundred parliamentarians from Latin American countries participated in the conference. The conference was organized by the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) and the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
