Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on the election of UN Security Council non-permanent members for 2023-2024

On June 9, the UN General Assembly elected the following non-permanent members to its Security Council for 2023-2024: Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland, Ecuador and Japan.

We hope that Valetta, Maputo, Bern, Quito and Tokyo will pursue a balanced and unbiased policy in the Security Council and facilitate the drafting of effective responses to the challenges and threats to international security in strict conformity with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Russia is firmly committed to constructive cooperation with the newly elected non-permanent members of the Security Council, with a view to settling the most urgent crises of our time. We are convinced that in the current conditions depoliticised cooperation and the pursuit of mutually acceptable solutions should be our common priority.
