Moscow welcomes the signing of a memorandum on military issues between the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and the opposition party “Mozambique National Resistance” (RENAMO), the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
As noted in the foreign affairs department of the Russian Federation, the document adopted on August 6 “provides for concrete steps to disarm, demobilize and partially reintegrate the regular military forces of the members of the Renaissance military formations that this party retained after the end of the 1992 civil war in Mozambique”
“Along with the previously reached consensus between the government and the opposition on administrative decentralization, adoption of amendments to the constitution and electoral legislation, the memorandum is a key element of the overall package of agreements designed to guarantee the final political settlement in Mozambique,” the ministry said.
“Moscow welcomes the agreement reached between the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and the opposition. In solidarity with the friendly Mozambican people, we hope that with the settlement of the existing contradictions, the recurrence of the power confrontation in the history of Mozambique will finally go away, and the country will have a solid civil peace that is so necessary to ensure its sustainable all-round development, “the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
