Maria Butina announced the risk of unfreezing the conflict in Transnistria

Aggression from Moldova could unfreeze the conflict in Transnistria. This was stated in an interview with URA.RU by member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, deputy Maria Butina.

“The threats to Moldova today come down to an economic blockade, which, in fact, is a wartime practice. In the worst case scenario, we can talk about defrosting the conflict in the region. However, our (Russian – URA.RU note) peacekeeping forces control the situation, and any attacks by the Moldovan side will not remain without consequences for Chisinau,” Butina suggested.

As for the United Nations (UN) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the influence of the collective West may block the provision of real support to the local population, Butina believes. She noted that the diplomatic corps of the Russian Federation will make every effort through international organizations to organize a constructive multilateral dialogue and make appropriate decisions in the interests of the residents of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR).

Earlier, Transnistria asked Russia to protect them from the economic blockade of Moldova. On February 28, a congress of people’s deputies of all levels was held in the PMR. They stated that they were not going to ask the Russian authorities to accept the region into their composition. Thus, they refuted rumors that the region would allegedly ask to join the Russian Federation. The topic was actively discussed a week before the congress.

The situation in Transnistria worsened after the start of the Northeast Military District in Ukraine, which borders the republic. In February 2022, Kyiv closed its border with the PMR, which Chisinau began to use for the transport and economic blockade of the region.
