Germany’s support for France’s call for a European army looks more like a demarche against US politics than a real willingness to create a military system. This was stated by a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Sergey Zheleznyak.
“However, so far it looks more like a political demarche of European leaders against US politics than a real readiness to create a new military system, especially since the Baltic countries, Poland and a number of other European states will support the United States in this important issue” – declared Zheleznyak.
He noted that, realizing the complexity of the task in the conditions of actual domination of American bases throughout Europe, the leadership of the Fifth Republic is not ready to take on responsibility for the implementation of the idea of a common European military structure and has obtained Germany’s understanding on this issue that can be supported elsewhere in Europe.
Nevertheless, the parliamentarian pointed out that Angela Merkel went further than her French counterpart and proposed the creation of a European Security Council.
“This demonstrates the understanding of need to gain independence from the United States and the concern of the leading EU countries that clearly understand that they become hostages of American politics in the face of Washington’s disregard of security in Europe. The intention to create an army is a completely expected response to aggressive and ill-considered actions of the United States, including the White House’s intention to withdraw from the INF Treaty” – the deputy added.
