Dmitry Novikov: “An attempt to punish Russians for supporting Maduro speaks about the weakness of the US position”

First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, a deputy from the Communist Party faction Dmitry Novikov commented on “Duma TV” the proposal of the US Congress to impose sanctions against Russians supporting Nicholas Maduro.

According to the parliamentarian, an attempt to adopt this document can be assessed as a weak position in Washington, which is unable to replay the situation in Venezuela.

“All previous attempts to crack the situation from the inside, to appoint a self-styled president, whom Juan Guaydo became, pressure on the republic, sanctions against individuals and economic ones, arrest of Venezuelan funds in Western banks, as well as a significant part of the gold reserves – all this did not affect , Maduro and the government did not shake, did not deprive them of wide popular support, ”the MP stressed.

“Therefore, one more step is being taken. (…) On the one hand, this is an attempt to deliver another blow to Maduro’s positions and to explain at once that Washington’s failures in the Venezuelan direction are explained not only by mass support inside the country, but by some external influence, as well (these actions. – . ed.) pursue the goal to once again accuse Russia of all mortal sins, as well as to prevent US policy in the international arena, “said Novikov.

Dmitry Novikov also noted that “Trump and his closest associates, as well as his opponents, who nevertheless support all sorts of trade wars and economic sanctions, must finally understand that there is such a thing as popular support, it’s the main thing the support of Nicolas Maduro, ensures the stability of his position. ”

Recall that a bill was passed to the US Congress on countering the “Russian influence” in Venezuela. The document is published on the website of the legislature.

The project proposes to introduce sanctions against Russians and citizens of other countries who support the current president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro. In particular, it is a ban on entry into the United States. The author of this initiative was the Democratic Party Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schulz.
