Elena Panina: “Extension of economic sanctions against Russia by the European Union looks absurd”

The EU’s extension of sanctions against Russia due to the country’s failure to comply with the Minsk agreements is absurd, for Europe it will be a loss of billions of euros, said Elena Panina, member of the State Duma’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Earlier, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, officially confirmed the extension by the European Union for six months of economic sanctions against Russia. According to him, the EU “believes that the implementation of the Minsk agreements remains an extremely important point, in respect of which we will be very careful.”

“The extension by the European Union of economic sanctions against Russia, linked to the implementation of the Minsk agreements, seems absurd, since not Russia, but the Ukrainian side officially declares its desire to revise these agreements,” Panina told RIA Novosti.

She added that for Europe, the extension of sanctions against Russia is not only lost billions of euros, but also another step towards the loss of foreign policy independence, “made under the American dictatorship.”
