Elena Panina: “Sanctions exacerbate the problem of food shortages on the planet”

Sanctions wars aggravate the situation of food shortages on the planet, told RIA Novosti member of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs Elena Panina, commenting on the report of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
According to the FAO, at least 135 million people are in a situation of acute food insecurity or worse, a new type of coronavirus pandemic could exacerbate the situation.
According to new data, more than half of the affected population is in Africa (73 million). In second place are Asia and the Middle East (43 million). 18.5 million are in the Latin America and Caribbean region and half a million in Europe.
“One of the most important factors aggravating the situation of hunger on the planet is the sanction war, the introduction of sanctions barriers,” Panina said.
The politician recalled that the famine in the DPRK in 1995-1998 was largely caused by just such sanctions. She added that such actions that impede the normal functioning of economies are especially unacceptable during a pandemic.
“Refusing to accept the proposals of the Russian side on a” humanitarian pause “and the termination of unilateral sanctions, at least in that part that directly damage the civilian population, the United States and its allies take responsibility for the inevitable tragic consequences,” Panina said.
