Moving the UN headquarters to Russia would greatly simplify the work of the organization, however, it is almost impossible to make such a decision at the General Assembly now, as an option, you can consider the residence cities of the organization’s secretary general, such as Vienna or Geneva, says Elena Panina, a member of the State Duma’s international affairs committee.
International UN Day is celebrated on 24 October. Political analysts previously interviewed by RIA Novosti stated that the UN Security Council remains an effective institution for making the most important world decisions, but the unfair actions of the United States, where the organization’s headquarters is located, raise the issue of imposing fines and relocating the location, for example, to Switzerland or Russia.
In an interview with RIA Novosti, Panina recalled that she made a similar proposal back in October last year, when the “visa crisis” flared up, caused by the US refusal to provide Russian diplomats with access to UN events.
“Since then, the situation has only worsened. America has ceased to be a stable country. New York, where the UN headquarters is located, has been recognized by the US presidential administration as one of three cities whose leadership allows anarchy, violence and destruction of property. Such conditions can hardly be called comfortable for the work of an international organization “, – said Panina.
In addition, the United States constantly threatens to withdraw from the UN specialized agencies, blocking their activities, the MP added.
“Moving the UN headquarters to Russia, of course, would greatly simplify the work of the organization. However, let’s be realistic – it is almost impossible to make such a decision at the General Assembly now. As for Geneva or Vienna, cities that, like New York, are residences of the UN Secretary General, where the special agencies of the United Nations are located, then moving the headquarters there would be absolutely appropriate. I think that such a decision would be supported by most of the UN member states, “Panina added.
The parliamentarian emphasized that after everything that happened in New York this year, the issue of relocating the headquarters began to be not political, but technical in nature: today this city, according to her, is one of the most uncomfortable places for the UN to work.
